Board of Directors Annual Meeting Minutes
Tuesday, October 5, 2010
Present: Marion Huxtable, Kaheya Cunningham, Bonnie Bolster, Pat Teal, Lynn Gressley Special Guest: Patty Perry, Jefferson Transit, Mobility Coordinator
Approval of Minutes
The minutes of the September meeting were approved without amendment.
Public Access
Patty informed us of the new Jefferson Transit schedule changes which begin on October 17. The most notable change is that the No. 11 Shuttle will return on an every 30 minute schedule which will make transfers and trip planning much easier for most users. She also mentioned that Transit is planning to extend Dial-A-Ride service to day-of reservations which will allow riders to check availability of a van and get a call back if a trip becomes available. Previously, all Dial-A-Ride reservations had to be made at least 24 hours in advance.
The Board decided that Lynn and Marion should attempt to get a meeting with Mike Glenn, the new Hospital CEO, to discuss short-term accessibility changes that could be made if the City’s sidewalk and Streetscape along Sheridan is funded.
The Board expressed its concern that the prohibition against bicycles and skate boards on certain downtown and uptown streets has not been enforced in the two years of the law’s existence. Signage expressing the prohibition is practically non-existent. Pat mentioned that she personally witnessed teenagers and young adults riding on the sidewalk on Water Street on one of the busiest tourist weekends. She mentioned that the NMTB has recommended in-set tile signage but this would require a grant and the NMTB doesn’t show any willingness to encourage the City to enforce the law.
Lynn will contact Laurie Medlicott to ask her to inquire what the City is planning (if anything) to implement the bicycle prohibition.
Other Business
The Board decided to concentrate its energy this Winter on revising the Disability Friendly Restaurant Brochure rather than plan a disability for a day event. We plan to still proclaim April as Disability Awareness month and to publicize the release of the new Brochure.
